How to Encourage English Department Student to Speak English Confidently

For Indonesian, to speak English in public is such a difficult thing. As we know, English is a foreign language and it is unfamiliar for some people. Or even English Department Students also think that English is just too not easy. That’s why; some people seem to think that English is hard to be understood and to be learnt. Nowadays, the world pushes us to speak or even write in English well since it is the international formal language.  Here are some things we have to do to get our confidence higher at speaking English. 

First, we have to be courage. When we take away our anxiety for making mistake in speaking, we can speak more comfortable. The people to whom we speak will understand of what we are saying to them.  We have to keep in our mind “just-try-first” efforts.

Second, we have to listen to something that is pronounced in English. We can go to find something that is amusing like songs, movies, or even some videos to engage us. The very simple way to improve our vocabularies and how it pronounces is through a song. We can start to look the lyrics then try to memorize it. As long as we know its meaning, we will use some structure from the song or even apply some words that are provided on it.

Third, we must read. It is a must to read. We may read some short story, news, or even just some tweets on the twitter. Reading is like killing two birds or even more in one shoot. Why do I say that?  Reading will make us know more about the application of words in a sentence, idioms, slang words, and the grammar. When we are familiar with the word, we will use it more often. So, when we read something and we just understand well about its context, it will help us more amazing in using varieties of words. And our speech will not sound monotone. 

The last, we have to practice. We often heard the quote “practice makes perfect”. It is definitely true. The more we practice, the more we understand. You will not hesitate to speak English with people around you if you admit it as your behavior. And it will make us spelling out easily something that we want to say without taking too much time to think. 

However, speaking English is actually simple if we don’t take it as a big load. I personally believe that speaking is one of the most important skills that English Department Student should have. As much as we think that English is necessary, we will not even surrender to learn more and more.
